As a first post in this blog, I decided to talk about the first step to Overcome Procrastination.
Here I am not talking about overcoming procrastination for a single task but beating procrastination as a general behaviour. I hope it is already obvious that beating procrastination once is hardly useful.
I am also avoiding the obvious stuff, that is why I titled this post 'the first unknown step'. The first known step is to recognise that the problem is there, most procrastinators know there'sa problem and would like it solved. But hey, if they knew the unknown first step, maybe they'd take it too.
The first unknown step is: 'Learning to take responsibility for your entire life, all situations, all ways you react to situations, all feelings and all behaviors'
Ok, ok! I dare say I know what you're thinking. That is not an unknown step, many have said it before me... Then I'm going to prove to that no one ever did. Read on!
What is Responsibility anyway? It is the ability to have a meaningful, productive response to a situation. You have a task to start and complete - you respond by taking action until it is finished to the best of your abilities.
We can intentionally mispell it as response-ability, for clarity.
Procrastinators, by definition, do not respond, or at the very best they don't respond in time. So tell me - how does one learn the ability to respond? (notice that the unknown step is not TAKING responsibility it is LEARNING to take responsibility).
And what if a procrastinator delays the undertaking of the learning process to learn responsibility? How do you overcome that?
See my point? The very first step is already puzzling! I am sure nobody ever told you how to 'Learn to respond' when you are incapable of responding.
Many parts of the procrastination trap are tricky, this is one of them!
If you want to discover how to learn response-ability tune watch this space! That's what I will reveal in the next post.
Until then I'll leave you wondering, while wishing you a happy and productive life. If you are desperate and in a hurry check out my book.
To your success
