Awareness of Time can help in Overcoming Procrastination



It is possible to prevent and get out of procrastination by adopting an attitude to value time.

We all know that procrastination is a waste of time.  One who procrastinates definitely doesn't give time the value it deserves.  If one realises how precious this limited resource is, one would never procrastinate on anything.

Bringing the mind face to face with this realisation  is another matter though.  It can be done, and rather quickly when one knows how.

First one needs to choose to value time more than he or she does.  Today some talk about oil being a finite resource (I personally believe it is being produced by the rocks all the time) ... in fact we've been saying that oils will quickly dry up since 1950s.  But let's not deviate, what about your time on this Earth.  How finite is it?

1) Your time on Earth is finite, as is everyone's?

2) You don't know how finite it is, you could die tomorrow.

Sorry to be a bearer of sad news but face it, you will die someday whether you want it or not, and for most people it is quicker than they want.

3) Most of your time needs to be spent on essential things like sleeping and eating.

4) If you delay stuff you have to do, something else may come up that requires your attention; this will delay thing seven further.

5) Do you ever realise how quickly a week, a month and years go by?

6) This one is the most important realisation.

If there are goals you want to reach in life and you decide to delay taking action.. you have delayed not just the task, not just your goal... you have delayed virtually EVERYTHING!

Sure there are things like sleep which can hardly be delayed, but your life's projects are all delayed if one small item is delayed.

If you waste half an hour a day, on anything, in 1 year you would have delayed EVERYTHING by 182 hours.  In fact you will have thrown 182 hours of your limited time on Earth away.

Start valuing time more, by focusing on the facts in the above lists.  Make the mental picture of the above beliefs about time look clear, focused and convincing to you.  By adjusting those mental pictures, these beliefs can be adopted quickly (in days or hours) by your mind.

This will build you a better relationship with time and you'd have eliminated one cause of procrastination.
